Spruce Up Your Diet With Spirulina

Spirulina is my favorite superfood because of its powerful healing properties. Spirulina has so many health benefits that when I discovered it a couple years ago, it became part of my daily diet. What is this weird sounding food you ask? It’s actually categorized as a Superfood, which are foods that have a dozen or more unique beneficial health properties, not just one or two. Spirulina is actually a blue-green spiral algae that grows in the Earth’s freshwater lakes and oceans. It is microscopic in size and dates back to the first appearance of life on Earth!

Spirulina contains a variety of nutrients including chlorophyll, which gives it its blue-green color, protein, vitamins, major minerals, trace minerals, essential fatty acids, antioxidants and much much more! You would never think that an algae could be a complete protein source and it is! With all of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals it contains, spirulina is known as a great immune system booster and antidepressant as well.

You can easily add spirulina to smoothies, fresh juices, raw chocolate concoctions, homemade salad dressings, and even sprinkle it on top of salads. Spirulina has a strong taste, so a little goes a long way! I like adding spirulina to my smoothies, and adding Salad Booster to my salads, which contains spirulina. I highly recommend trying Salad Booster, which you can buy in the raw food isle of your Whole Foods; it contains lots of flavor & lots of spirulina!

Buy some pure spirulina powder or a tasty raw snack made with spirulina and see how it makes you feel. Maybe it will give you an energy boost. Maybe a little spirulina in your diet is just the vegetarian protein source your body needs right now!

Until next time!
